Kournas Lake is the only natural fresh water lake in Crete. In ancient times, it was mentioned by Stephen the Byzantium as Korisia and there should be an ancient temple attributed to Athena, the Korisia and appeared to be dedicated to the Ippus or the Kori.
The lake is located in the municipality Apokoronos, east of Chania, close to the borders with the prefecture of Rethymnon and just 2.5 km. away from the sea.
