The basic technical difference between FUE & FUT concerns the follicular units΄ harvesting, as in FUE the follicular units are extracted one by one from the donor area, while in FUT the receiving of the follicular units is accomplished through strip excision (single strip harvesting and stereo-microscopic dissection).
After a hair transplant, a patient has to wait approximately 3 months before experiencing the first signs of hair growth. The transplanted hair will continue to grow during the following months and in 10 to 12 months (or more in some cases) the patient experiences the complete hair transplant result. As it has already been mentioned, hair transplant redistributes the existing hair from areas of the scalp with adequate density to the areas affected by hair loss. Thus, hair transplant does not create new hair and cannot stop hair loss which means that it cannot provide a full head of hair and basic prerequisite for someone who wishes to have a hair transplant procedure is to have adequate donor hair supply. The final result varies from person to person, as different parameters have to be considered in each case: the facial characteristics, number of transplanted hair follicles, shaft diameter (fine hair provide less density), hair color and texture, skin color, etc. Thus, in the case of 2 different sessions involving the same number of hair follicles in different persons, the result will be different for each.

The FUE hair transplant technique at Bergmann Kord Hair Clinic involves the one by one extraction of follicular units from the donor area. It is implemented through the extraction of follicular units from the back and sides of the scalp and their reimplantation to the area affected by hair loss. The FUE can reproduce natural hair growth, as transplanted hair regrows in its natural occurring groups of 1-4 hairs. The FUE method has eliminated the need for a linear incision (no scar technique) and allows hair transplant doctors to perform Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation through single and direct harvesting of the follicular units. The FUE process involves a circular incision (of 0.7mm-0.9mm diameter) around each follicular unit, the extraction of the follicular unit and its implantation to the balding area of the scalp. The FUE method enables physicians to harvest individual follicular units, while ensuring the minimum of peripheral damage.
Basic Information about FUE
- FUE can be implemented for men & women with Male or Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)

- FUE is less invasive than FUT, due to absence of linear incision and thus is associated with a smoother postoperative course (the donor area requires a shorter healing period and it is left to heal by second intention)
- FUE is usually preferred by people who tend to keep their hair very short (less than 1cm long)
- FUE is ideal for hairlines, temples, sides, eyebrows & scar repairs
- The presence of imperceptible small white spots allows quite short haircuts, but in cases of extensive extraction of follicular units scars may be noticeable
- FUE is a time-consuming method and for the same number of follicular units it requires more sessions than Strip (and It is more expensive per price/follicular unit)
- Mega FUE sessions (more than 2.500 follicular units) may have to be completed in 2 subsequent days (this is usually defined after your personal consultation & examination by the doctor, as it depends on personal parameters)
- There are specific preconditions for being an FUE candidate (limited donor supply, limited scalp laxity – very tight scalp, skin that tends to heal scarring etc)
- FUE is also preferred when someone has undergone several previous hair transplant surgeries and is no longer able to undergo a further Strip procedure
What you should know before the FUE
There are two ways to proceed with the preparation needed prior to the Follicular Unit Extraction. The first way requires that the patient has a marine haircut, and then the team of hair transplant doctors proceeds with the extraction of follicular units one by one, from the donor area. This requires though that the patient will not be able to return to his work and usual activities for at least 15 days. Additionally, shaving the head could lead to the patient feeling uncomfortable, because of the resulting change in appearance.
For those patients who do not wish such a change of appearance, or who cannot tolerate shaving due to their social status or job, or who are reluctant to shave due to the scars on the scalp, a second way of preparing the donor area before surgery is available. If a patient’s hair is long enough at the back of the head there is the option of shaving only a specific zone (or a few zones) from the donor site. This way, only a strip of about 1 inch wide needs to be shaved, and then it gets camouflaged by the rest of hair, that is long enough to cover the area until hair re-grows. This method can be so undetectable, that many patients are not able to tell their hair was even shaved.

Brief Description of the FUE Procedure
FUE is implemented through local anesthesia and is therefore a virtually painless procedure. Hair in the donor area will be clipped to a 1mm length.
Follicular Units’ Extraction
Our doctors, with the use of special, up-to-date surgical tools of minimum diameter, extract hair follicles one by one from the donor area. The extraction sites are -for the time being – small, red spots. Each extracted follicle comprises of 1 to 4 hairs.
Hair Follicles’ Preservation
Extracted hair follicles are kept in a NaCl aqueous solution until the time they are reimplanted.
Care Of Donor Area
No linear incision is needed with the FUE, thus the extraction sites receive simple medical care with antibiotic ointment and are temporarily covered (Healing by second intention).
Recipient Sites Creation
The doctor creates the recipient sites to the thinning areas of the scalp, taking into account all the required standards for their size, direction and distribution to the thinning area. Recipient sites should ensure proper preconditions of growth for the reimplanted hair follicles and should not disturb the elasticity and microcirculation of the recipient area.
Hair Follicles’ Placement

Donor and Recipient Area Examination

FUE for scars

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) hair loss treatment, which is an innovative treatment method for male and female hair loss. PRP is a method of autologous tissue revitalization and regeneration and is based on platelet rich plasma, a portion of blood enriched in platelets that is easily extracted through our special protocol, from a small blood sample. The direct injection of PRP into the area affected by hair loss appears to be highly effective as a hair loss treatment as well as a hair transplant boosting treatment. This method takes advantage of the various growth factors that platelets contain, which promote cell proliferation and tissue regeneration.
The role of Growth Factors in hair loss treatment
Two of the most important components of PRP are Cytokines (proteins of growth differentiation and immunological response) and Growth Factors. Growth Factors are special proteins which activate the repair of tissues which do not function properly or have been damaged. The Growth Factors promote capillary formation (angiogenesis), tissue repair and collagen production. They also encourage the normalization of the hair follicle unit.
